Silk and Snow vs Casper

See how Casper Stacks up Against Silk & Snow

We’ve provided an in-depth review of Casper, and taken the opportunity to compare them against Silk & Snow, one of the leading Canadian Mattress Brands. If you’d like to jump right to the review, click the link here.

What Makes Silk & Snow Different
True High-Density Foam
At Silk & Snow, we strictly use 4lb High-Density Memory Foam in our mattresses. 4lb memory foam ensures your mattress is not only more comfortable, but also built to last. Other companies claim to use "high-density" foam, but often use inferior foams that are below 4lbs in density.
Total Transparency
Casper does not disclose the materials used in the Casper Original, Element, Nova Hybrid and Wave Hybrid. Silk & Snow uses premium materials from Canada to build a high-quality mattress and we are upfront about the materials we use. We believe strongly in transparency of what is used to make our mattress.

Casper Mattress Overview

Casper was founded in January 2014 in New York City, New York by Philip Krim, Neil Parikh, T. Luke Sherwin, Jeff Chapin, and Gabriel Flateman, with the goal of delivering mattresses that could be easily ordered online and conveniently shipped, right to the customers doorstep. In November 2014, Casper expanded its operations to offer their products to Canadian sleepers. Casper currently has an expanded product line including pillows, protector, duvets, bedding, bed frames, and accessories.

Casper Mattress Construction and Materials

Unfortunately, it is not exactly clear where Casper Mattresses are produced. On the FAQ section of Casper’s website, in response to the question; “Where are Casper Mattresses made?” they claim “All our mattresses are designed by our award-winning team in California.” Of course, this does not answer the question of where the mattresses are actually made.

As far as construction goes, Casper offers multiple different varieties of mattresses, each with their own unique construction and materials. Casper uses layers of polyurethane foam, gel pods, memory foam, natural latex in all of their mattresses, and pocketed coils in select mattresses.

Casper has a total of 5 mattress designs on their website. Their most popular mattress is the Casper Original mattress, which has gone through a number of design changes over the years. The Casper Original is a 3-layer, zoned mattress with a top layer of breathable perforated polyurethane foam, a transition layer of memory foam, and a base layer of polyurethane foam. The Original Hybrid version features pocketed coils at the base as well. Of all Casper mattress types, the Casper Original and Hybrid Original would be the most comparable to the S&S Mattress and Hybrid Mattress.

The Casper Element mattress, replaces the former Casper Essential mattress, as their cheapest model. The Casper Element mattress has a 2-layer design featuring a top layer of breathable perforated polyurethane foam, with a base layer of polyurethane foam. The Casper Element mattress is 10" thick and is the thinnest mattress in the Casper line.

The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress is the newest model in the Casper line. Introduced in March 2020, it was marketed as their "most plush" mattress. The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress is priced in between the Casper Original and the Wave Hybrid. The Nova Hybrid mattress follows a similar theme within the entire line of mattresses, by using a top layer of perforated foam. This lies on top of a transitional layer of zoned polyurethane foam, a third layer of zoned memory foam, and a support layer of durable pocket coils encased in polyurethane foam.

The Casper Wave Hybrid is their highest priced model and is only offered in a hybrid models (previously, the Casper Wave mattress was offered an all-foam version but this no longer appears to be the case). The Casper Wave Hybrid features a top layer of breathable perforated polyurethane foam, a second layer of natural latex, a third layer of zoned memory foam, a fourth layer of polyurethane foam with gel pods, and a base layer of polyurethane foam. The Casper Wave Hybrid mattress is designed to have continuous ergonomic zones with gel pods.

Casper Mattress Firmness and Feel

With such a wide array of options for mattresses, Casper Sleep covers multiple bases when it comes to different levels of firmness.

We rate the Casper Element a 6.5/10 in terms of firmness. With two layers of balanced polyurethane foam, the Casper Element does have a slight sinking feel due to the structure of the perforated foam. However, unlike a memory foam mattress, the sinking in the Casper Element is not as prominent. The base layer is firm and very responsive, giving the mattress an overall semi-firm feel.

The Original Casper Mattress was rated at a 6.5/10 in terms of firmness as well. With multiple layers of polyurethane foam paired with a transitional layer of memory foam, the Original Casper mattress has an overall semi-firm feel, with minimal sinking due to the sturdy top layer of perforated polyurethane foam.

The Casper Wave Hybrid was rated a 6.0/10 in terms of firmness. Made from comfort layers of memory foam and polyurethane foam on top of a base of firm pocketed coils, the Wave Hybrid has an overall semi-firm feel. You’re likely to sink in to the top layers of foam, but the coil base provides a distinctly firmer feel.

The Casper Nova Hybrid was rated a 6.0/10 in terms of firmness. Made from two layers of perforated polyurethane foam followed by a zoned support foam layer and a base of pocketed coils, the Nova Hybrid has a semi-firm feel, although it is the softest of the Casper mattresses.

Where Can I Buy Casper Mattresses?

All of Casper’s Mattresses can be purchased from the Casper website, as well as other bedding products, such as sheets, bedframes, and pillows. Casper has also partnered with select retailers across US and “Sleep Shops” are located in cities across the US and Canada.

Do Casper Mattresses Smell?

While Casper Mattresses are made entirely from CertiPur-US Memory Foam (meaning it passes national health standards for harmful chemical compounds), some Casper customers have still noted a strong odour emitting from the mattress when it is first opened. If the odour of the mattress bothers you, it is recommended that customers wait 24 hours before sleeping on the mattress to allow the odour to subside.

Casper Mattress History

On April 22, 2014, Casper Sleep officially launched, and sold $1,000,000 worth of products within the first 28 days of operation. In November 2014, Casper expanded its operations to offer their products to Canadian sleepers. In November 2015, Casper expanded their product line to offer pillows and bed sheets.
