Simba Sleep Overview

Simba Sleep was founded has a textile company in Derbyshire, U.K., all the way back in 1979. In 2002, Simba decided to diversify their business model, and began designing and producing mattresses around that time. With a new vision in sight, Simba began creating their own proprietary materials to create a unique hybrid bed-in-a-box, and debuted their new mattress in February of 2016.

In 2018, Simba Sleep expanded their distribution to Canada, and is currently being sold in Sleep Country brick-and-mortar retail locations across the Great White North.

Simba Mattress Construction and Materials

The Simba Mattress is a pseudo-hybrid mattress, meaning its construction is made up from a combination of foam layers on top of a base of micro coils and foam. In total, the Simba Mattress is comprised of four different layers. The first layer (known as the comfort layer) is made from 1.5 inches of Simbatex, a proprietary open cell polyurethane foam created by Simba. Simbatex is a cooling foam infused with graphite particles to filter heat away from your body. However, Simbatex is not viscoelastic, meaning it does not provide the same pressure point relief as memory foam.

The second layer, or transition layer, is made of 1.5 inches of synthetic latex, that is zoned to provide optimal levels of support. Synthetic latex is somewhat of a misnomer, as it is a petrochemical product that attempts to mimic the properties of natural latex. Finally, the support layer is made from 2-inch patented miQro springs, which are pocketed conical miniature springs. This means that although the Simba Mattress is technically a hybrid, it does not contain full-sized coils. These miQro springs are then surrounded by a 6” base layer of high-density polyurethane foam, to provide edge support.

Simba Mattress Firmness and Feel

As far as firmness and feel goes, the Simba Mattress was rated at a 6.3/10 for overall firmness, on a scale from very soft to very firm. Due to its multiple layered structure of Simbatex, synthetic latex, miQro springs, and high-density of polyurethane foam, the Simba Mattress has an overall medium firm feel. The combined support of the miQro springs and high-density polyurethane base foam is very noticeable in the overall feel of the mattress, as the proprietary Simbatex foam does not provide as much of a sinking sensation as memory foam.

This medium firm feel is suitable for back sleepers or those looking for a firmer feeling mattress.

Where Can I Buy the Simba Mattress?

In North America, the Simba Mattress is currently only available for purchase in Sleep Country brick-and-mortar locations, or online through Simba’s website.

Does the Simba Mattress smell?

While the Simba Mattress is made using only Certi-PurUS certified foam (meaning it passes national health standards for harmful chemical compounds), Simba does admit that the mattress may have an off putting odour when it is first removed from the packaging. If the odour of the mattress bothers you, Simba recommends that customers wait at least 24 hours before sleeping on the mattress to allow the odour to subside.

The History of Simba Sleep

As previously mentioned, Simba was founded as a textile company in Derbyshire, U.K., in 1979, before eventually diversifying their manufacturing to include mattresses in 2002. However, the bed-in-a-box Simba Mattress that we know today was launched in 2016, and was initially only available to customers in the U.K., France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Ireland, and Germany.

In 2018, Simba expanded their distribution to include Canada, and began offering a different version of the Simba Mattress to Canadian customers through a partnership with Sleep Country. This initial version of the Canadian Simba Mattress was entirely made from foam and was manufactured in China. In 2020, Simba Mattress announced it would be improving upon its original Canadian mattress by moving the manufacturing to Canada. Additionally, Simba updated the overall design of the mattress to make it similar to their original European mattress.
