GhostBed Overview

GhostBed, the e-commerce mattress startup portion of Nature’s Sleep, was launched by Marc Werner in 2010. Drawing on his experience with his family’s business, the Werner Ladder Company, he set out to create his own pillow and mattress after living in constant pain from three neck surgeries. In 2015, he introduced the GhostBed Mattress (which was named after his childhood fear of ghosts under his bed) to simplify the mattress shopping process. Today, the original GhostBed Mattress is known as the GhostBed Classic. The company has since expanded its product offerings to include bed frames, pillowcases, adjustable bases, bed sheets and pillows.

Ghost Mattress Construction and Materials

GhostBed offers multiple different varieties of mattresses, each with their own unique construction and materials and all proudly made in Canada. GhostBed incorporates a plush cover and gel memory foam in all their mattresses and coils in select mattresses.

GhostBed has a total of 4 mattress designs on their website. Their most popular mattress is the GhostBed Luxe.

GhostBed Classic

The all-foam GhostBed Classic, which replaces the original GhostBed Mattress, is a 3-layer mattress, featuring a plush cover made of a blend of viscose and polyester, a top layer of 1.5” of aerated Dunlop latex foam, a transitional layer of 2” of gel memory foam and a foundation of 7.5” of high-density foam. It is 11 inches thick and the thinnest mattress in the Ghost Mattress line.

GhostBed Flex

The GhostBed Flex was marketed as their “best luxury hybrid mattress.” It is comprised of 7 layers, beginning with a cool-to-the-touch plush cover made with phase-change material, which is designed to react to your body heat. This lies on top of a transitional layer of 0.5” of cooling fibre, a third layer of 0.5” of gel memory foam and a fourth layer of 1” of foam that is responsive like latex and contours like memory foam. This is followed by a fifth layer of 1.5” of gel memory foam, on top of individually wrapped and reinforced coils and a base layer of 7.5” of high-density foam. The GhostBed Flex is 13 inches thick. Of all Ghost Mattress types, the GhostBed Classic and GhostBed Flex would be the most comparable to the S&S Mattress and Hybrid Mattress.

GhostBed Luxe

The GhostBed Luxe follows a similar theme as the GhostBed Flex by incorporating a plush cover made of phase-change material. It is a 7-layer mattress with all of the same layers as the GhostBed Flex, except for the coils. Instead, it features a layer of foam that is responsive like latex and contours like memory foam. The GhostBed Luxe also uses more gel memory foam and is 13 inches thick.

GhostBed 3D Matrix

The GhostBed 3D Matrix, a technologically advanced hybrid model, is slightly softer than the GhostBed Classic. It is offered in two models: 3D Matrix Hybrid and the 3D Matrix SmartBed, which are both 12 inches thick. The 3D Matrix Hybrid has a 7-layer design, featuring a cooling cover made of phase-change material, a transitional layer of gel polymer, a third layer of 2” of gel memory foam and a fourth layer of foam that is responsive like latex and contours like memory foam. This is followed by a fifth layer of soft transition foam, on top of individually wrapped and reinforced coils and a base layer of 1” of high-density foam.

The 3D Matrix SmartBed, which was introduced in September 2021, is the newest model in the Ghost Mattress line. It is comprised of 7 layers, including many of the same layers as the 3D Matrix Hybrid. However, it has smart sensors and adjustable air chambers instead of layers of coils and foam that is responsive like latex. The base layer of high-density foam is also one inch thicker.

Ghost Mattress Firmness and Feel

With such a wide array of options for mattresses, GhostBed Canada covers multiple bases when it comes to different levels of firmness.

We rate the GhostBed Classic a 6/10 in terms of firmness. With three layers of mixed foam—a high-density foam core, contouring gel memory foam and an aerated latex top layer—it provides a blend of support and bounce.

The GhostBed 3D Matrix Hybrid was rated at a 4.5/10 in terms of firmness. It is slightly softer than the GhostBed Classic. Made from stretchy gel polymer, gel memory foam, coils and foam that is responsive like latex, the GhostBed 3D Matrix Hybrid has a plush feel, whereas the GhostBed 3D Matrix SmartBed has a customizable feel. The GhostBed Flex was rated at a 6.5/10 in terms of firmness. With multiple layers of gel memory foam and foam that is responsive like latex, followed by individually wrapped coils on top of a base of high-density foam, the GhostBed Flex has a medium feel. It is slightly softer than the GhostBed Classic, for a cushiony and cozy sleep.

The GhostBed Luxe was rated at a 5.5/10 in terms of firmness. Made from multiple layers of gel memory foam and foam that is responsive like latex, the GhostBed Luxe has a medium-plush and spring-like feel. It combines surface and core cooling so you can fall—and stay—asleep, no sweat.

Ghost Pillow Care

GhostBed Canada recommends different care instructions for each pillow.

Wipe the GhostPillow Memory Foam gently with a clean, damp cloth and a mild detergent. Then allow it to dry. The inner foam core cannot be submerged, but the outer zippered cover is completely washable.

The entire GhostPillow Faux Down can be laundered. Wash it in cool water with mild detergent, then place it in the dryer on a gentle cycle with a tennis ball to help the pillow fluff back up.

The outer cover of the GhostPillow Shredded is machine washable, so all you need to do is unzip it and throw it in the wash! GhostBed Canada recommends washing it in cold water on a gentle cycle, and tumble drying on low. If the inner cover needs to be washed, remove all of the fill first. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, and tumble dry on low.
